At Hello Surprises, we offer two types of authentic Sanrio products: Sanrio Original & Sanrio Licensed.
Sanrio Original items are designed, manufactured, and exported directly by Sanrio Japan, primarily for the Asian market. These products are known for their exceptional quality, fine details, and unique designs - just like what you’d find in Japanese Sanrio stores or specialty shops like ours in the U.S. Many Sanrio Originals are produced in limited quantities and rarely reissued, making them highly collectible. It's not unusual for these items to fetch premium prices in the secondhand market.
On the other hand, most Sanrio products found in the United States are Sanrio Licensed. This means a North American company has obtained rights from Sanrio to design, produce, and sell items using Sanrio characters. Licensed products vary widely in price, quality, and how often they're restocked. You’ll typically find these licensed items at stores like Five Below, Target, Hot Topic, Walmart, and BoxLunch. Unlike Sanrio Originals, licensed goods are often mass-produced and easier to find. At Hello Surprises, while we do offer some licensed Sanrio items, our specialty lies in carrying hard-to-find Sanrio Originals.
Wondering how to tell the difference between a Sanrio Original and a Licensed product?
It's simple: check the tag!
A Sanrio Original product will have a tag that clearly says "Sanrio Original," often alongside Japanese text. If the tag doesn’t say "Sanrio Original," it’s a licensed product.
For example, take a look at these two tags below:
The plush on the left has a licensed tag from SUPLAY, a company authorized to produce Sanrio character merchandise in North America.
The plush on the right has a "Sanrio Original" tag — this one comes straight from Sanrio Japan.
Both are absolutely adorable, but they’re different in origin!
Some collectors prefer to focus only on Sanrio Originals, while others enjoy a mix of Originals and Licensed items. It all comes down to personal preference—and both options offer plenty of kawaii charm.
